In 2017, Ben began a new chapter when he took over an embroidery shop called Spirit Creations. With a clear vision and a healthy dose of determination, he began transforming the business, expanding its focus to include gifts and unique finds alongside embroidery.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the business evolved once again. The gift side of the shop was rebranded as Bird Box Gifts, and Ben took the opportunity to move into a larger location. The new space brought both sides of the business together, providing room for the embroidery work of Spencer & Company as well as the growing boutique gift shop.

Of course, none of this happens without the talented people behind the scenes. Franny, our Retail Manager and Embroidery Staff Assistant, and Anya, our primary Embroidery Staff member, bring their creativity, skill, and attention to detail to every project. Together, they help turn ideas into beautifully personalized pieces and create the high-quality, one-of-a-kind gifts that customers have come to love from Bird Box Gifts and Spencer & Company. Their talent and care are a big part of what makes our businesses—and our little corner of the community—so special.

But being a small-business owner is just one of the many hats Ben wears.

Outside of the shop, Ben is a full-time dad to two kids and a 7th-grade English teacher. He's also deeply involved in the local community theatre, where he's had the opportunity to serve as a director, writer, board member, and actor.

Whether he's helping a customer find the perfect gift, creating something unique through embroidery, teaching a classroom full of seventh graders, or working behind the scenes at the theatre, Ben is happiest when he's creating, connecting with people, and being part of his community.

At the heart of it all, Ben is passionate about creating, connecting with his community, and building businesses that bring a little more creativity and joy to the people around him.
